Ellie's aunt had dropped her -- and the supplies and replacement flowers paid for out of her allowance for the next couple weeks -- off at the Anders' house at 7:30 AM sharp. She was thankful that her Aunt Maggie and Mrs. Anders were preoccupied with talking to each other and had gone inside for morning tea. And that Mike and Dennis were doing whatever it is boys do on Saturday mornings. If they were watching her work, they gave no indication of it.
Once she'd repaired the grass and spread the seed like Uncle Dylan had showed her, she decided to take a short break and look through the journals for the other kids at school. Oh, and look, Mike "I'm so perfect" Anders had updated his. Since swearing was something she tried to avoid, she'd begun to think of him as a sphincter. And because he was rather attractive, a Sizzling Sphincter to be exact.
That guy is the BIGGEST bluffer ever! He's not coming over, and never will!
With her well wishes to Lizbet given and their exchange over, she got back to fixing the damage she'd done. Her Aunt Maggie had gone home, and Mrs. Anders came out to garden with her. Ellie'd bought a whole tray of vibrantly colored chrysanthemums to replace the pansies she'd trampled with Bucephalus, and she arranged them in a gradient of color from white and yellow to orange and red. Taking care to mix in some of the compost with the soil and finishing up with some mulch, she was rather pleased with what she'd done.
And maybe, if Mrs. Anders and her Aunt Maggie didn't mind, she'd start to do more of this. Of course, minus the victory laps on her horse. Helping Michael's mom clean up and put away the tools, she climbed the fence and waved goodbye. She enjoyed her run home, even smiling a little.
Just maybe, this place wasn't quite so bad.
